So you have decided that your child will finally get his birthday wish and will give him a puppy. Great! Puppies are so cute and adorable. They respond to love and affection and will lick you forever if they could! But be very careful here. Since your child will be spending a lot of time with this animal, it is only common sense that you get it checked by a veterinarian and have him perform a full check up on the puppy.
A complete analysis by a veterinarian will be able to determine whether the dog is in good health. Blood samples taken from the dog will be able to pinpoint abnormalities of any kind and detect any potential diseases that the pet might be carrying. In addition to the full checkup, another good idea would be to make sure whether the puppy is up-to-date on all its vaccinations. The pet store where you purchased it from should be able to provide you with its current status and anything else that might be needed.
A veterinarian will even be able to give some advice on pet etiquette or provide you with literature on how to keep your dog happy and healthy. You would be surprised to learn something you did not know about dogs. Take me for example. I had no idea that feeding a dog chocolate would make him sick and could potentially be fatal! I eat chocolate all the time and nothing bad ever happened to me! I have never owned a pet and I was totally oblivious to this fact. So if you are new to the pet world, check out some books and consult with your veterinarian.
Taking these precautions and providing complete veterinary care will make you feel comfortable about your pet and its interaction with your family. So as you watch your child play in the backyard or watch TV on your sofa with your puppy asleep in your lap, you will have the peace of mind that all members of your family including your pet, are in good health.
